Not a bad view... Looking back across Lake Wakatipu on the descent to the airport |
So we've come to Queenstown for a week, and we have found Winter!
That might not sound like something to get excited about, but Auckland winters don't deserve the title, with the temperatures rarely dropping below 12C. Here the air is cold enough to blow 'dragon puffs', as Tilly puts it, but it's crisp and sunny outside rather than damp and it's really nice!
We didn't have time to do much after we arrived on Wednesday apart from a stroll along the waterfront by the hotel.
We had to wear coats - big novelty!
And Harriet deigned to keep her hat on. Must have been chilly enough for her to overcome her usual objections.
The next day we headed off to explore Arrowtown, but en route Reuben spotted a sign. 'Historic bridge' he shouted, so we detoured to investigate the bridge over the Shotover River.
'Hmm', he pondered, 'these posts don't look very prehistoric'. Given that the bridge was built in 1915, it wouldn't count as historic in many places, but they measure their history by different timescales down here!
We had a quick game of Pooh sticks
watched a jet boat pass underneath
and discovered that a panorama shot of a linear structure results in an unlikely looking bridge!
Then on to Arrowtown, which was the place where gold was first discovered in the 1860s, leading to the Central Otago gold rush.
It still has a bit of a Wild West feel with the wooden buildings and the false shop fronts. It's very touristy but cute too and we enjoyed a wander.
Winter roses and old wall, Arrowtown.
