The end of a successful first day at school! |
They start them a year later over here, but Reuben finally had his first day at school today. Waltzed in without any obvious concern (although he did confide to Hannah as she was leaving "I'm still feeling a bit shy"), and when asked what his first day at school was like reported "Awesome" (of course, there is no other superlative in NZ?).
For the Grandparents among you, here's a full frontal of the uniform (which required a second mortgage - you can't see in the pictures, but under the fleece is a short sleeved shirt: price $53 or £27 at today's exchange rate. As the uniform is only available from the school, we think the monopolies commission have some work to do over here!) with Reuben standing outside his classroom.
This of course means Tilly now gets some quality 'Girl Time' with Hannah on a Monday, but will have to face day care sans Reuben from tomorrow. I imagine she'll survive. She's started swimming lessons today (something Reuben's been doing for a while and she's been dying to do) and even more importantly she's now old enough to start Playball at day care. She's equated this with being a big girl for some time, so she's dead chuffed.
We all went off to the Circus yesterday, so we've had two 'acrobats' leaping and thudding around the house since then. A bit of practice required before they'll be pulling in the crowds.
Hannah's back to teaching German at the uni tomorrow now the winter hols have finished and I'm still saving Auckland one (or two) kidneys at a time.
We've now had 2 uninterrupted weeks in our new house since we got back from the UK and are starting to make a growing list of jobs and things to get on with. Friends across the way made the mistake of having their carpets dyed the other day. It looks great, but as a pair of pants takes about 4 days to dry in the Auckland winter, a house load of carpets takes about 10 days with the aid of industrial fans and dehumidifiers, it turns out! Think we'll not go for that. We're planning mainly just redecoration and trimmings, except for remedying the total lack of heating that Kiwis put in the their houses. We're already counted as slightly eccentric because this place has 2 heaters in it (for a 3 bedroom house that doesn't seem excessive you'd have thought), but it would be nice not to have to cringe every time you sit on the loo seat.
