Oooh, big sense of déjà vu. About a year and six weeks ago there I was, blogging from Hong Kong airport en route to NZ. And here we are again, waiting at Gate 33 this time for the second leg of our flight back to Auckland.
The flight to HK was not as good as it might have been as Tilly woke up after about 1 hour asleep and cried inconsolably for what seemed like a very long time. Why were you so cross and sad we asked her this morning. 'Because I didn't want to wake up' she replied. You and the rest of the cabin, Tilly..... Fingers crossed that she'll be too tired to wake up and be bothered by such things on the next part of the journey.
Most importantly, big thank yous to everyone who hosted us on our first trip back to Blighty, especially Kay in Leeds who submitted to a home invasion (sorry Kay, but it's kind of your fault for having all those spare rooms!) and Eddie who was very good at sharing his toys with Reuben and 'Dilly', but also Clare Connelly and parents in Somerset and Cornwall. And thank you to to everyone who came to see us while we were in the UK, fed, watered or entertained us, often at short notice. We appreciate the efforts you made and it was fabulous to catch up with you all. We hope some of you will consider making the trip out to see us in the not too distant future.
So, England was very ..... hmm, wet, mostly, and green and for quite a lot of our stay considerably colder than the Auckland winter. Thanks for laying on the good weather folks! We felt very underdressed the first few days. Silly us for underestimating the vagaries of the British summer. It was slightly strange noticing things like car number plates, road signs, terrace houses, dry stone walls and realising that they were different after a year away and still very familiar. Wonder what is going to seem odd back in NZ?
