Yes, the earth moved for us at 21:09 last night, but only for a couple of seconds.
Felt like a truck had driven into the side of the house and shifted everything sideways. There was a thudding noise and the windows rattled a bit, but that was it. Children didn't notice it and Reuben rather put out about that! The quake was magnitude 2.9 so pretty puny, but the epicentre was at Mission Bay, about 3km west of us, which is probably why we noticed it.
There are a couple of articles about it in the NZ Herald here and here and some more detailed stuff about it on the official NZ geophysical measurements service site here. The report in the first newspaper article from the guy who experienced the quake while on the loo is amusing, but for those worried about our elf and safety, be consoled by the last two paragraphs.
