2019 40 Hour Famine

This weekend was the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. Here's what happened during our fundraising for refugee children from South Sudan.

Reuben and Tilly have taken part in this before (see here for our 2017 experience); Harriet's too young officially, but this year she wanted to join in too.

Reuben and his friend Jacob decided that they were going to live outside in a tent, only come into the house to use the loo, make all their own food, only use what they had packed themselves in one bag and not use any furniture or electronic devices.

They were very conscientious about everything, but as they had packed lots of books and are both voracious readers, I don't think they were suffering too much at this point.

Was Reuben really snuggling up to Kiwi basketball superstar Steven Adams?

Err no - that was one of those books.

Tilly and her friend Luuka and Harriet went for the same approach but as we had 40km/h winds over Friday evening and Saturday, Tilly and Luuka did their camping inside the garage.

And Harriet did hers on the bedroom floor.

The no furniture rule made eating spaghetti off the floor a tricky task.

But eating a cupcake with no hands AND off the floor - that's advanced stuff!

On Saturday evening, the children cooked dinner over an open fire in the garden

Yummy!

Sunday breakfast is traditionally pancakes in our house, but that meant the children could only eat them if they cooked them.

The boys had got up and sorted out their own breakfast earlier but we took pity on them and allowed them a second breakfast of pancakes. Still had to be eaten outside though!

And the inside crew still had to eat theirs on the floor.

But then, after a morning on the beach, it was 12pm, the 40 hours were over and the sofa was no longer off limits!

A great big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our fundraising so far - the children are really excited to see what they've raised. If you haven't donated and would like to, you can do so via this link on the World Vision page: https://my.worldvision.org.nz/d/ss/s5nx2w/reuben-tilly-and-harriet-burdekin. Or tell us and we'll do it for you.
